Your Guide to Nursery Essentials
A place to sleep
The NHS recommends that your baby sleeps in the same room as you during the first six months. It is essential for parents to have a safe and comfortable place for their newborn to sleep. You will need a crib, co-sleeper or a Moses Basket for the first few months. You will also need a good mattress to ensure that your little one sleeps comfortably and safely.
Cot and mattress
You will need a cot and mattress once your baby is six months old. When buying, be sure to measure and check that the mattress is the correct size for the cot. Some retailers offer a mattress with the cot as part of a bundle. Be sure to buy the best mattress you can afford to ensure that your little one sleeps comfortably and safely. It is well worth taking the time to research and buy the best mattress to support your little one.
Bedding
Cotton sheets, blankets and mattress protectors are a must. A mattress protector will help to keep the mattress clean and fresh and prolong its life.
Changing mat
From day one, a good changing mat is a nursery must-have. This may come as part of a changing basket or changing unit, or you can buy one separately. Look for a changing mat with raised sides to prevent your little one from rolling off.
A comfortable chair
This is an investment for parents rather than baby and is very important. To have somewhere comfortable to sit for those night-time and early morning feeds is essential. A rocker chair can help to soothe your little one to sleep with the rocking motion, but a comfortable armchair works well too. Have a blanket or throw nearby in case you get chilly.
Night light
A soft dim night light can help to reassure your little one and will help you to check on them without disturbing them by turning on a bright overhead light.
Baby Monitor
A baby monitor will help to reassure you when your little one has fallen asleep. You can keep a close eye on them with the parent unit without accidentally waking them up. Baby monitors now offer soothing sounds and lullabies. Calming sounds can help to regulate and improve baby’s sleep patterns.
You don’t need a lot to make a cosy haven for your baby. Once you have your nursery essentials, you can add all the ‘extras’ you want at your leisure.
